Our Boy Zeke
In December, 2015 we lost our rescue mastiff Sam. He had been a large part of our family for well over 2 years.
Approximately 9 months passed, our hearts were healing, and we decided then that it was time to start looking for another rescue. We saw a picture of Zeek on the rescue site and he seemed to be reaching out to us. He was in a foster home and we went to see him and knew instantly that he was the one for us.
He has a funny little smile with a big gap between his front teeth. His disposition is truly that of a gentle giant. When we first got him it took him a good week before he was comfortable with us. I had to hand feed him to get him to eat and it was very difficult to walk him on a lead. But after that first week we found that he was a very smart boy. He knows all his basic commands and has even learned a few more. One of which is for his own safety. He loves to come upstairs with us but then he would come down barely touching three steps. Now all you do is tell him easy and he walks ever so slowly and easily down the steps touching each step as he goes. He now has sleeping privileges in our bedroom outside of his crate.
Kevin and I are now empty nesters but we have grandchildren ranging in age from 2 to 13. We wondered how Zeke would take to the kids and what the kids would think about him. He is after all a very large guy at 181 pounds. But again, when we introduced them to him he instantly wanted to play. Our youngest loves to lay on the floor, with his head upon Zeke’s belly and watch cartoons.
We want to thank the rescue group for allowing Zeke (yes this is the way we spell his name), to come to our home. Once again we feel blessed that such a beautiful animal that was so mistreated in his early years, has an ability to love once again.
Sincerely – Paulette and Kevin Dolan
